Is your pool just not looking as good as it used to? Are you looking for improved water clarity in your pool’s water? The solution may lie in the contents of your swimming pool filter. Pool filters are generally designed to be filled with what is called a “pool filter media”. Pool filter media is generally composed of sand, glass or some other fine compound.
Whatever swimming pool filter media your pool uses, as it ages its effectiveness decreases due to the following reasons:
- The sand that is commonly used clumps together causing the water to only flow through a small portion of the filter media rather than the entire bed of sand.
- Harmful bacteria can grow in hardened portions of the filter media.
- Debris can collect over time causing a “debris ball” inside the filter which causes the filter to operate inefficiently.
At Marlin Swim Pool Service we recommend that filter media generally be replaced every 5 years. This ensures that clumping, bacteria and debris doesn’t cause your filter to stop performing like it should and keeps your pool looking great.
As a more efficient pool filter media replacement we often recommend replacing sand media with glass media. The reason we recommend glass media is that unlike sand it doesn’t have the tendency to clump, it uses more of the entire volume of the media to filter your pool water and can therefore operate longer without backwashing & the glass media is less “sticky” so it more easily releases dirt and debris when backwashing is performed. But one of the most important reason for using glass is the clarity of the water it provides swimming pools. Glass media filters give swimming pools some of the clearest water possible by filtering particles down to the 6-8 micron range compared to sand which is around the 20-40 micron range. Such filtering and water clarity was previously only thought possible with expensive Diatomaceous Earth media (DE media), the fossilised remains of 12-13 million year old algae, but is now possible with the far less expensive glass media.
Do you own a swimming pool filter that doesn’t have a filter media but uses a cartridge filter? Periodically cartridge filters need to be chemically washed to lift out dirt particles that are deeply embedded in the cartridge filter material. The benefits of such a service are increased water flow and better filtering performance giving you clearer, safer water in your pool or spa.
So whatever brand of filter your swimming pool or spa has and whatever media type it uses, whether its sand, glass or a cartridge filter, don’t hesitate to contact Marlin Swim Pool Service for help.
